Free Shipping Calculator — Is It Worth Adding More?
Find out whether padding your cart to reach free shipping is a good deal — or just paying the shipping is cheaper.
How it decides
- It works out how far you are from free shipping: the threshold minus your cart total.
- If the gap is smaller than or equal to the shipping fee, the answer is "Add more". You spend the same money either way, but instead of it vanishing into shipping you end up with goods.
- If the gap is larger than the shipping fee, the answer is "Pay shipping". Padding the cart would cost you more than the shipping fee itself.
- If your cart is already over the threshold, there is nothing more to add.
Worked examples
| Situation | Cart / threshold | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| $2.50 short · $3.00 shipping | $17.50 / $20.00 | Add more Saves $3.00 in shipping |
| $3.00 short · $3.00 shipping | $12.00 / $15.00 | Add more Saves $3.00 in shipping |
| $8.00 short · $3.00 shipping | $22.00 / $30.00 | Pay shipping Padding costs $5.00 extra |
| Already over the threshold | $31.00 / $30.00 | Already free |
The verdicts in the table come from the same function as the calculator on this page. When the gap equals the shipping fee, the verdict is "Add more".
Check these before you add more
- Will you really use it? The calculation assumes that what you add is something you would buy anyway. If you pad the cart with things you do not need, what you waste on them is more than the shipping you saved. Pick consumables you will certainly use — toilet paper, detergent, bottled water.
- Look at the total after coupons. Some shops measure the free-shipping threshold on the price before discounts, others on the amount you actually pay after coupons. Check which amount the checkout page uses, then enter that.
- Check the combined-shipping rules. On marketplaces with many sellers, each seller has its own shipping fee and threshold. Only items from the same seller add up towards free shipping.
- See whether a membership already gives you free shipping. A paid membership or a first-order perk may mean there is no shipping fee at all.
When to use it
Use it when you are shopping for groceries or household basics online and you are a few dollars short of the free-shipping threshold, wondering whether to add something. If the gap is larger than the shipping fee, paying the shipping is the better deal for your wallet.
Frequently asked questions
What if the gap equals the shipping fee?
The verdict is "Add more". You spend the same amount, but the shipping fee disappears and you keep the goods.
What if the shipping fee is zero?
With no shipping fee there is nothing to save by adding more, so if there is a gap the verdict is "Pay shipping" (an extra cost of zero).
What if I do not know the free-shipping threshold?
You need to enter the threshold to get a verdict. Look for wording like "free shipping over $X" on the product page or in the cart.
Are the amounts I type saved?
No. The calculation happens only in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
